It began with a stolen breakbeat. The six-second Amen drum fill, lifted from a 1969 Washington D.C. funk record, became the backbone of a genre that would redefine what electronic music could be. By 1994, they called it drum and bass.
Three decades on, the scene has fractured into an ecosystem that runs from jazz-inflected liquid DnB to the clinical aggression of neurofunk, from crowd-ready jump-up to the structural minimalism of South London's deep rollers.
Goldie's Timeless, Shy FX's Original Nuttah, Calibre's two decades of prolific liquid output: these are not footnotes to electronic music history. They are its spine.
Drum and bass was never interested in behaving itself. It could be beautiful and violent within the space of a single record, soulful one moment and completely alien the next. That contradiction became its strength.

For more than three decades, drum & bass has remained one of the most influential forces in electronic music. What began in the UK’s underground rave culture has grown into a worldwide movement, shaping club culture, festivals and production techniques across every corner of dance music.
The genre’s greatest strength has always been its ability to evolve, from soulful liquid rollers and cinematic atmospherics to heavyweight dancefloor weapons and cutting-edge neurofunk, without losing the energy that made it unique in the first place.
What keeps it moving is how the scene is built. Record shops, radio, promoters, small labels and bedroom producers still feed one another, and a tune can go from a laptop to a packed room in a matter of weeks. That short distance between making a record and testing it on a crowd is a big part of why the sound keeps renewing itself.
The range is wide. Rollers sit deep and hypnotic, neurofunk turns cold and mechanical, jump up goes straight for the dancefloor and liquid brings melody and soul. One night can take in all of it, and the best DJs move between them without losing the room.
It is also why the audience is so broad. People who were there at the start stand beside people who found the music on a playlist last year. Festivals, club residencies, radio shows and online communities give drum & bass more ways in than at any point in its history, and D-N-B.CO.UK exists to follow all of it.
In 2026, the scene is stronger than ever.Independent labels continue to discover new talent, established artists remain at the forefront of innovation, and dedicated communities around the world are proving that drum & bass is far more than a genre, it is a culture built on creativity, progression and connection.

Most artists build an audience through a label, a booking agent, or a lucky record. Bellyman built his from the back seat of a car. No stage, no lighting rig, no door policy, just a DJ at the wheel, a phone camera, and an MC who’d already spent years earning his stripes the traditional way, on the mic at raves and radio sets out of North West London.
Car Barz started as a simple idea: strip an MC set down to nothing but the bars. No crowd to play to, no visuals to hide behind, just skill, delivery, and chemistry with whoever’s driving the set. That simplicity turned out to be the format’s biggest strength. It’s cheap to film, effortless to share, and it puts the one thing DnB culture has always valued above all else, raw ability , front and centre with nowhere to hide.
“Globally recognised force in Drum & Bass. Award-winning entrepreneur, founder of The Bellyman Show, and creator of the influential Car Barz series.”
Bellyman · Artist Bio
The format scaled fast. Multiple seasons in, Car Barz had become an established fixture of the scene’s online culture, built on rotating line-ups of MCs and DJs, each episode a fresh pairing. Then came the International edition: North America’s leading drum & bass MCs, same format, same back seat, over 100,000 views on that instalment alone. What started as a London idea was suddenly a transatlantic one.
Alongside Car Barz, Bellyman is a key figure in Dirty Phat Beats, the label and brand built with DJ Innovator, who has released across the drum & bass underground and hosts the Dirty Phat Beats Show every Monday, 2pm GMT, on lifefm.tv. It’s the kind of steady, weekly-grind visibility that built the scene long before social platforms existed, paired here with a format built entirely for them.
340,000 followers on Facebook alone, a consistent presence across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and SoundCloud under the same @mcbellyman handle, and a merch line running independently at Bellymanmerch.bigcartel.com. Car Barz keeps expanding, new cities, new MCs, new DJs behind the wheel, and Bellyman’s own bars haven’t slowed down to make room for the entrepreneurship. Both keep growing at once.
A car was never meant to be a venue. Bellyman built one anyway, and drum & bass came along for the ride.
